JSA template – Australia

A JSA should be completed for any non-routine task, work involving identified hazards, or when procedures change. In Australia, while not always legally mandated like SWMS for high-risk construction work, JSAs are considered best practice for ensuring worker safety and demonstrating due diligence in your safety management system.

A JSA (Job Safety Analysis) is a general safety tool for breaking down tasks to identify hazards, while a SWMS (Safe Work Method Statement) is legally required for high-risk construction work under Australian WHS regulations. JSAs are typically shorter, more flexible documents that can be used across various industries for any task requiring risk assessment.

Follow the hierarchy of controls: first try to eliminate the hazard, then substitute, implement engineering controls, administrative controls, and finally personal protective equipment. Be specific about each control (e.g., “Use scaffold instead of ladder” rather than “Prevent falls”). Each identified hazard must have at least one corresponding control measure.

Use this JSA template for non-routine tasks, work with changing conditions, or when analyzing new processes. Standard operating procedures are better for routine tasks that follow consistent steps. Many organizations develop SOPs based on completed JSAs once the safest work method has been established and tested through repeated safe performance.
